After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto in 1976, Magne completed his Master of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 1978, specializing in the study of lithics from the Porcupine Mountain Region in Manitoba. In 1983, Magne completed his Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, focusing on lithics from the Central and Southern Interior regions of British Columbia.
While at the University of British Columbia, Magne was involved with several important archaeological projects happening at the time, including the Hat Creek and Eagle Lake projects. He also occasionally taught at both the University of British Columbia and the University of Manitoba. From there, he went on to work at Parks Canada in various capacities, mostly concerning their cultural resource management operations.
In 2014 Mange received the Public Service Award of Excellence from the Governor General of Canada and sits as an adjunct professor at numerous Canadian universities. Prior to retiring from Parks Canada, Magne worked closely in the discovery of two wrecks related to the Franklin Expedition in Northern Canada. In addition to his professorships, Magne now acts as a Smithsonian Journeys Expert for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
