In 1945 Borden began to organize and conduct salvage archaeology projects in the face of development and the destruction of archaeological sites. After many years of lecturing, and serving on committees and boards, Borden played a major role in the passage by the British Columbia Legislature of the Archaeological Sites Protection Act in 1960.

Portée et contenu
This fonds contains of material relating to the surveys of DhRs-19, the Liquid Air site, conducted by Dr. Charles Borden and UBC Anthropology 420 students in 1969 and 1970. The DhRs-19 Liquid Air site is located within the traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nation. It lies in close proximity to the site of c̓əsnaʔəm, which was a historical settlement site for the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam First Nation). Surface surveys at the site were carried out by Charles E. Borden between 1955 and 1957, yielding stone beads and tools. Reports from student excavators note that illicit excavations had been carried out at some point prior to 1969. In 1969, the Vancouver City Council announced plans to develop the area. The Centennial Museum and UBC’s Laboratory of Archaeology requested the city’s permission to conduct salvage work, which was approved and resulted in the Centennial Museum and Simon Fraser University conducting preliminary excavations in July of 1969. LOA’s preliminary excavations occurred between September and December 1969 and were conducted under permit #69-0997. Dr. Charles Borden oversaw the excavation, assisted by LOA staff members and UBC students enrolled in Anthropology 420; student Paul G. Sneed served as site foreman.
The LOA excavations at the Liquid Air site aimed to provide a chronology for the site and associate it with a cultural phase. The preliminary excavations encountered mostly stone tools, stone beads, and flaked stone, as well as faunal remains of salmon, mollusks, birds and mammals. They also encountered hearths, layers of ash, fire-cracked rocks, and possible post holes.
