Roy L. Carlson is an accomplished American-Canadian archaeologist and instructor at the Simon Fraser University. He is best known for his status as an expert of Northwest Coast archaeology and his establishment of the Department of Archaeology at the Simon Fraser University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Washington in 1952 and 1955 respectively, where he assisted in excavations on the San Juan Islands. In 1961 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and began teaching at the Simon Fraser University by 1966.
Carlson is a prolific publisher and editor in the scholarly community, publishing over 60 articles and countless other works. He has appeared in numerous radio, television, and newspaper interviews discussing British Columbia Archaeology, including CTV's University of the Air program. In 1995, he was presented with the Smith-Wintemberg Award for outstanding contribution to the archaeological discipline by the Canadian Archaeological Association.
