Biographische Angaben

Charles Edward Borden was born May 15, 1905 in New York City, raised in Germany. Returned to the United States and graduated from Berkeley with in M.A. in 1933 and then a Ph.D. in 1937 in German literature. After the war Borden began to become interested in Archaeology in British Columbia. He quickly progressed from amateur to professional and in 1949 was appointed Lecturer in Archaeology in the Departement of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in addition to keeping his position in the German department.

In 1945 Borden began to organize and conduct salvage archaeology projects in the face of development and the destruction of archaeological sites. After many years of lecturing, and serving on committees and boards, Borden played a major role in the passage by the British Columbia Legislature of the Archaeological Sites Protection Act in 1960.

Bestandsgeschichte

Records from the Tweedsmuir Project has been in the custody of the Lab of Archaeology since it was received after the 1954 field season. In 2011, the collection was re-housed in the current LOA archives location.

In 2022, the collection was rearranged and described to include several new files from the BC Sites Photo File (added to Series 1, Photographs) and the LOA Administration Artifact Catalogues F Sites (added to Series 2, Artifact Catalogues) that were identified as belonging to the Tweedsmuir Project along with the maps. The Assistant Archivist rearranged and re-titled several file folders in order to place the files in chronological and alphabetical Borden site number order in the Fall of 2022. In April 2023, five pages of field (ethnographic) notes were incorporated into the Field Notes Series, by the LOA Archivist.

Eingrenzung und Inhalt

The Tweedsmuir fonds contains all of the records related to the archaeological activity in response to the archaeological survey and excavation project conducted under the name "Tweedsmuir Project" conducted by Charles E. Borden and other participants during 1951-1952. Records from this fonds include: maps, photographs, artifact catalogues, field notes, drawings and reports.
This fonds also contains an unpublished paper titled "Preliminary Report on Survey of Southern Carrier Area" by Wilson Duff.

Physischer Zustand

Some textual records and cartographical material are fragile due to folding and crushing along the outer edges of the paper. Some negatives are showing signs of vinegar syndrome and have been put into cold storage.

Records from this fonds have been arranged and described to best reflect the original order in which Dr. Charles Borden created and maintained them. Borden stored records related to his archaeological activity separated by document type. This practice, as a way of filing for Borden, continued to be used by LOA in the post-Borden era (1978-present).
