Administrative history

The Archaeological Society of British Columbia is BC-based charitable organization that serves to promote awareness and education about archaeology in the province. Founded in 1966, the ASBC historically promoted volunteer and non-university led excavations at several archaeological sites across British Columbia. This practice has since been discontinued and today the ASBC is most well-known for their quarterly journal, The Midden, as well as educational initiatives like lecture series and school talks.

Custodial history

Belongings (artifacts) and documentary material related to this project were transferred from the Archaeological Society of British Columbia to the Lab of Archaeology, and have remained under LOA’s custody since its transfer. In 2011, the collection was rehoused in the current LOA archives location (room 221A at MOA).

Scope and content

This fonds consists of materials relating to excavations by the Archaeological Society of British Columbia (ASBC) carried out at two sites: DgRs-9 ća·yǝm (Tsawwassen Beach) and DgRs-11 Sƛ̓aləp (English Bluff, Tsawwassen). The majority of materials contained in this fonds pertain to DgRs-9, and include artifact catalogues and descriptions; Administration files, daily log forms from the site (supervisor logs and ones from individual site pits); photograph negatives and hand-drawn graphical materials; and final excavation reports. The latter encompasses findings from both DgRs-9 and DgRs-11.
This fonds consists of 2 boxes and is arranged into 4 series:
1. Artifact Catalogues
2. Field Notes
3. Photographs
