História administrativa
The Archaeological Society of British Columbia is BC-based charitable organization that serves to promote awareness and education about archaeology in the province. Founded in 1966, the ASBC historically promoted volunteer and non-university led excavations at several archaeological sites across British Columbia. This practice has since been discontinued and today the ASBC is most well-known for their quarterly journal, The Midden, as well as educational initiatives like lecture series and school talks.
História custodial
Artifacts and documentary material related to this project were transferred from the ASBC to the Lab of Archaeology and have remained under LOA’s custody since their transfer in 1969. Administrative records indicate that both artifacts and archival documentation for the project were stored together in the “VA bay” until 2004, when they were processed, sorted, and catalogued by Nadine Gray and Andrea Cartier. Textual records were previously stored in a binder labelled “N86” and in the LOA Archaeology Reading Room. Some artifacts were previously stored in display cases in the room “MOA 121”. Additional information regarding this period of the records’ custodial history can be found in the DgRs-11 administration folders in the black filing cabinet in the LOA Archives.
In 2011, the collection was re-housed in the current LOA archives location (room 221A at MOA). In 2024, the collection was arranged and described to best reflect the original organization of the records and their context. This finding aid was created as a result, with the first edition finalized by May 2024.
